Keeping the “science” in data science

  • Controlling cherry-picking of results by defining best practices, a priori.
  • Controlling the researcher degrees of freedom that inflate significance rates. 
  • Eliminating HARKING (Hypothesizing After Results are Known), a practice all misrepresents chance results as significant findings. 
  • Considering the sample biases that lead to faulty applications of results. 
  • Establishing the construct validity that ensures we are really measuring what we think we are. 
  • Controlling threats to internal validity, by designing clean studies and controlling confounding variables.
